A book as it often has been referred to during my training is Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring, there is such a book you should have read when working with environmental issues. It is an extremely important document. This year marks fifty years since the book was published. The book describes a future society where birds and insects die as a result of the toxins used in cultivation. It also clarifies the connection between health and chemical usage and chemicals impact on nature and environment. The book became a huge success and led to a great debate about how chemicals were used. Above all was the impact on the use of DDT during the same period was made plain as hazardous to health. The documentary describes Rachel Carson's life, how she was training to be a biologist, but also writes books. That many of her books got so much attention is believed to be due to her ability to mix fact and fiction, the ability to describe reality but without it getting boring or too dry. Before atoll Silent Spring came to Carson had been following cases where people become ill after coming into close contact with chemicals. Industry tried to deny any connection between the disease and the use of, for example, pesticides such as DDT. At last she felt compelled to write the book as a contribution to the debate and to put an end to hymlandet about how harmful certain chemicals were. While working atoll on the book was Carson seriously ill from cancer and writing the book was a race against atoll the clock. At the same time, she was extremely anxious that the book's contents would be completely accurate so that you could not criticize it or deregistered atoll it for not being truthful. She succeeded with their work and I think the book helped many people became aware of environmental issues. The documentary atoll is called ... and no birds sing, and broadcast on Swedish radio, you can listen to it here.
