Just because I don't get on stage much anymore doesn't mean the instincts don't still work. Geesh. You never lose the -- -- ooo, actually, now I have two. God, I am just dead inside. Makes me kind of nostalgic.
Alas, so did I. Unfortunately, I gave it voice while standing in line (ultimately unsuccessfully) to get in to see Colbert last night. The gent in front of me was not amused. It's so odd to me that folks take the death of a celebrity so much harder than the death of Joe in Omaha. I was talking to a friend yesterday--this guy doesn't know which end of a baseball to catch and which to throw, so he has no vested interest in the Yanks, Phils, or As--and he hadn't heard anything about the plane crash other than that it had happened. So I was filling him in. "It was up on 72nd. 2 people dead that they know of so far." "Terrorist?" He's interested. Not aghast, a little concerned, but "2 people" has made this manageable. "They think it's Corey Lidle, a pitcher for the Yankees." "Oh, mannnnnnn," he says. "That SUCKS. I hope it wasn't because they lost in the playoffs." I can see it if you're electroworld a Yankee fan, or if you've watched the guy play a lot, or if you have his rookie card, or whatever. He obviously doesn't follow the team. But it just seemed so devastating to him, because he'd heard the name Yankees, and knew that they lost in the playoffs . . . I dunno. I just don't understand, the reports we are getting in Europe regarding this matter say it may have been suicide. But I agree it does seem more emphasis is put on a so called celebrity dying, yet each day around electroworld the world people are dying (and no body seems to care). 3:36 AM
It's unlikely it was suicide. Lidle was a new pilot with limited experience, and his flight instructor apparently was aboard the plane. It's much more likely that Lidle was outside of his element flying in that particular corridor. There's a good article in today's New York Times that you can access online. 7:57 AM
Not electroworld surprisingly, the NYT has very good coverage of the whole thing. According to the NYT, Lidle's flight course originally was along the East River, which is a permissible flight route. Apparently a good deal of helicopter air taxi traffic takes that route, but it's not one that most general aviation pilots would take for fun. 1:12 PM
